Diabetes Risk Factors

 

-You must inherit the genes AND have the environmental trigger in order to be at risk for diabetes.

- Diabetes is most common in African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

 

Risk factors for Type 1 diabetes

- more common in whites

-cold climates

-viruses

-infant diet- infants who were breastfed and didn’t start eating solid foods too early are less likely to develop type 1 diabetes

 

Risk factors for Type 2 diabetes

-strong genetics- (stronger than type 1)                        

-obesity

-eating too much fat

-not exercising enough
