Insulin- The body needs insulin because it helps to use sugar in the body. It takes the sugar from the blood and puts it into cells in order to give them fuel.

Type 1 Diabetes- Type 1 is most often diagnosed in children and young adults. With Type 1 diabetes, the body doesn’t make insulin. People with type 1 need to keep their blood sugar as close to normal as possible and also may need insulin shots. The treatment is usually a strict diet and blood sugar control, exercising and also oral medication.

Pre-diabetes- You can have pre-diabetes before Type 2 is diagnosed. Blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed with type 2.

Type 2 Diabetes- Type 2 is diagnosed in people of all ages. Type 2 diabetes is marked by the body not making enough insulin or the body’s cells ignores the insulin that is made.  Insulin injections are used to treat type 2.

Gestational Diabetes- Gestational diabetes is diagnosed in women that are pregnant. Certain hormones from pregnancy block the mother’s insulin in her body and makes it hard for her to use it, (insulin resistance).

Diabetes can lead to other health concerns also such as heart and kidney problems and problems with nerves, skin, eyes and feet. For more info about complications of diabetes from the American Diabetes Association click here
